Pay Per Lead: Better than Adsense?

January 30, 2009 · Filed Under pay per lead

Pay Per Lead is when you refer sales lead to a merchant. In the world of the internet, this means sending the customer to the merchant’s web site.

Pay per lead is another way that affiliate programs pay out. Instead of getting paid for every click, the publisher-website owner gets paid by the merchant anytime a site visitor fills out a form and performs an action that does not require him to purchase anything.

Usually it is the email address that is what the merchant is after, because he now has a direct line to a potential customer and can work on closing a sale, without having to pay any more commissions.

This is a fantastic way for webmasters-publishers to make money (we are talking about you here) because it is easier to get a site visitor to submit his email address to get a free gift, free offer or free information than getting him to submit his credit card details and click the BUY button, right?

Every time such an action is performed, the submission is tracked and you get paid — just for getting someone to submit his name and email address, or maybe answer a survey or even get a free gift!

This pay per lead merchants are some of the most desirable merchants to promote. The conversion rate for pay per lead programs can be better than pay per sale because the visitor isn’t asked to buy anything.

Also, commissions on leads are usually higher than getting paid for clicks. So some folks are now focusing on pay per lead instead of pay per click, although the latter is still the easiest and most popular way to monetize your site, thanks to Google Adsense.

If you have no traffic or traffic that is not targeted, you may not make any money with pay per lead programs. But there’s another way, email marketing. If you have a list of subscribers to your site or service, you can validly send them emails containing links to your pay per lead ads! So if you are able to generate a lot of leads, both through your website or via email marketing, this can be a very lucrative online business for you.

Imagine a scenario where 1,000 potential customers submit their information. Usually the incentive is to receive free stuff from the merchant, remember? Many folks will think, “There’s no harm in submitting my email address — if he sells me stuff I don’t have to buy anyway.” Or the potential customer could be thinking, “Well let him send me an email, I’ll get the free gift and unsubscribe to the (merchant’s) list or maybe, if it is a good product, I’ll buy it.”

If you get 1,000 submissions a month, and the leads are paid $1.00 (some leads pay as much as $30.00, mind you — these are usually for car insurance and the like)  then your efforts earn you $1,000 every month!

And honestly, what effort are we talking about here? The effort is spent getting visitors to your site, and you’ll be doing that anyway even if you do not attempt to monetize your site via pay per lead.

But honestly, this is one of the ways those folks who claim to earn thousands of dollars every month do it, too!

And so can you.

To answer the question: Is Pay Per Lead Better than Adsense?

Yes, it can be. You can earn more money this way because merchants pay higher for leads than advertisers pay for clicks.

My suggestion both monetization models and see what pays you more.

    Hi there,

Basically, I try to focus on topics related to my niche, always paying particular attention to the needs of the readers or site visitor. My aim is to provide useful information always.

Are there any financial ads that are available for this feature? I am looking for something besides adsense.

    Hi Jason,

Pay per lead is being considered here as an alternative to adsense. Basically, it can be made to look like adsense ads but its a CPA (cost per action) model.

So your visitors have to perform an action for you to earn — but it’s actually not to purchase something. Pay per lead captures their email addresses in exchange for a free gift (e-book, report, downloadable games, etc.) if they submit their email address.

So if you are paid $.25 to $7.50 PER LEAD, that’s better than what folks make on adsense clicks, right?
